The Life of Hands

Mise-en-scene:

Our short film The Life of Hands was shot in two locations, these were indoors in the classroom because we needed a dark area. The second location was outside in a gutter because we needed an alley looking location and wanted to change up the locations so it isn't boring. In the disco scenes we had a disco ball in the background and the dark lighting to help create the disco. However the lighting was too dark in some places compared to other shots because we filmed on different days. For the costume used googly eyes and felt tip to make the face. This helps create the characters and helps the audience recognize who is who, for example the lady hand wore nail varnish.

Camerawork:

In our short film we used a POV shot of the chav hand at the disco looking over at the man and lady hand dancing together though the chav hand eyes. This was used to show the audience what he is looking at and his jealousy. We also used close ups to show the emotion of the hand characters. The characters being hands made it very hard to create/show emotion, but the close ups showing a happy or sad face backed up with the story helped create an emotion attachment with hands.

Editing:

For the DepicT! short film competition the short film had to be 1 minute 30 seconds so we had to cut some of the footage on Premier Pro down to 1  minute 30 seconds or less. We used fades to show the passing of time and when the short film starts to show its started and and also at the end to show it's now over. We also had a 180 degree rule error at the disco when the chav hand walks over to the other two hands dancing and suddenly flips over to the other side showing the hands in different places and lots of jump cuts which can confuse the audience.

Sound:

In our short film The Life of Hands we used funky, up beat dance music at the disco to create a party atmosphere for the audience. When the man hand leaves the disco, you can still hear the music but it's much quieter and actually sounds like the music is coming from inside a building. This added a nice effect to it. There was also sad music playing when the man hand was walking out of the disco on his own with a sad face. This was a good idea because the sad music helped create emotion and tells the audience how the character is feeling. However we did have some audio problems, some of the dialogue was much louder than some parts and other parts were too quiet and difficult to hear over the music.
